Laurence Grafftey-Smith

Sir Laurence Barton Grafftey-Smith KCMG , KBE ( April 16, 1892 - January 3, 1989 ) was a British diplomat .

Life

Laurence Barton Grafftey-Smith joined the foreign service on November 14, 1914 and became a student interpreter in the Levant . On August 7, 1916, he was promoted to unskilled labor. From December 11, 1916 to March 14, 1918 he was Vice Consul in Alexandria. On October 16, 1919, he became third-class legation secretary in Cairo . On December 21, 1920 he was appointed Vice Consul in Jeddah . From December 26, 1921 to April 8, 1922 he was the acting consul in Jeddah. From February 16 to June 13, 1923 he was Vice-Consul in Constantinople . On December 2, 1924, he was appointed Vice Consul in Constantinople. From 1916 to 1947 Laurence Barton Grafftey-Smith was a member of the Consular Service in the Levant. From 1939 to 1940 he was Consul General in Tirana, Albania. From 1947 to 1949 he was High Commissioner (Commonwealth) in the newly formed Pakistan .
