Andrij Sadowyj (born August 19, 1968 in Lviv ) is a Ukrainian politician , liberal activist, mayor of Lviv since 2006 and chairman of the Samopomich party (self-help) since 2012 .

biography

Andrij Sadowyj attended the Lviv Radio-Electronic Technical Center, after graduating from high school he studied at the National Technical University of Lviv , which he graduated with the title of Electrical Engineer (1995) and Economist for Finance and Credit (1997). In 1999 he finished his studies at the Academy of State Administration under the President of Ukraine ( Академія державного управління при Президентові України ).

In the period from 1987 to 1989 he did military service, after which he worked as an electrical engineer. Between 1992 and 1995 he was Deputy Director of the Lviv Branch of the Foundation for Social Education of Young People at the Council of Ministers of Ukraine. From 1997 to 2005 Sadowyj held the post of council and administrative chairman of an electrical engineering company. From 1997 to 2001 he was chairman of the administration of the Foundation for the Development of the Lviv Region ( Фонд розвитку Львівщини ). Since 2002 he has been the chairman of Teleradiokompania Lux. Since 2005 he has headed the Samopomitsch (self-help) association, which became the third largest party in the Verkhovna Rada after the parliamentary elections in Ukraine in 2014 .

In January 2006 he founded the television news channel 24.

In 1998 he was elected to the Lviv City Council. On March 26, 2006 he was appointed mayor and held the post again in the 2010 elections. Until 2009 he was a member of Viktor Yushchenko's National Union Our Ukraine party . In December 2012 he turned the self-help association into a political party.

On July 25, 2014 at 11:30 p.m., Sadovyi's home was hit by an anti-tank missile fired by an unknown perpetrator in his absence. The explosion damaged the roof, ceilings and windows.

After several fires at the Lviv landfill, in which three firefighters died, protests against Sadowyj broke out at the beginning of June 2016 because he allegedly kept the landfill open for 10 years contrary to the demands of the health authorities. The landfill opened in the Soviet era is only a few kilometers from the city center and is the largest in the country.

Sadowij is the chairman of the supervisory board of the “ Andrej Scheptyzkyj ” cultural and art foundation . As mayor of Lviv he takes part in the Polish-Ukrainian reconciliation chapter.

Private life

He is married to the art historian Katerina Kit and has five sons.
