Life

Buras studied physics at the University of Warsaw with a diploma in 1971 and then went to the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen , where he received his doctorate in 1972 and was a post-doctoral student until 1975 . From 1975 to 1977 he was at the theory group at CERN and then until 1982 member of the Fermilab theory group (from 1981 with a permanent position). From 1982 he was a member of the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich and in 1988 he was given a full professorship at the Technical University of Munich. From 1990 to 1992 and 2002 to 2004 he headed the Institute for Theoretical Physics at the Technical University of Munich and from 2006 to 2012 he was project manager in one of the seven research areas of the Cluster of Excellence Origin and Structure of the Universe . In 2012 he officially retired (and is Emeritus of Excellence ) but heads a fundamental physics group at the university's Institute for Advanced Study.

He deals with perturbative calculations in the standard model of elementary particles. At the end of the 1970s he became known for QCD corrections in deep inelastic scattering of electrons and neutrinos on protons. In the 1980s he investigated QCD effects in the electroweak decay of mesons as well as the phenomenology of CP violation and flavor physics in the Standard Model and beyond ( supersymmetry , GUT ).

In 2007, he was part of a group that suggested the Super B Factory to explore the flavor physics of the Standard Model with higher statistics than BaBar or Belle (and as a continuation of them).

He is a full member of the Bavarian Academy of Sciences (2010), a member of the Polish Academy of Sciences (2013) and the Polska Akademia Umiejętności in Kraków.

In 2011 he received an Advanced Grant from the European Research Council . In 2007 he received the Marian Smoluchowski Emil Warburg Physics Prize . In 2010 he was Erwin Schrödinger visiting professor at the University of Vienna. From 2008 to 2011 he was a Carl von Linde Fellow. Buras was awarded the Max Planck Medal for 2020 .
