Andy Gibson
Albert Andrew "Andy" Gibson (born November 6, 1913 in Zanesville (Ohio) , † February 10, 1961 in Cincinnati ) was an American jazz trumpeter , arranger and composer of swing .
Gibson learned the violin, but never took trumpet lessons. He played in the orchestras of Lew Redman (1931), Zack Whyte (1932/33), McKinney's Cotton Pickers (1934735), Blanche Calloway , Willie Bryant and Lucky Millinder . From 1937 he became a full-time arranger and composed. He worked for Duke Ellington , Count Basie (1938 to 1942), Cab Calloway , Charlie Barnet (1937 and from 1945) and Harry James, among others . From 1942 to 1945 he led a big band in the US Army. After that he worked for Barnet and then mainly in rhythm & blues . 1955 to 1960 he was musical director of King Records.
In 1959 he recorded under his own name: Andy Gibson and his Orchestra with Blueprint at Camden, with Gibson as arranger and conductor, a. a. with Paul Gonsalves , Kenny Burrell , Emmett Berry , Dicky Wells , Vic Dickenson , Milt Hinton (and with the mainstream sextet on the rest of the record).
His compositions include I Left My Baby (a hit on Count Basie sung by Jimmy Rushing ), The Great Lie and The Hucklebuck (based on Now's the Time by Charlie Parker ).
