Andy Mann

Andy Mann (born 1949 in New York City , † February 3, 2001 in Houston ) was an American video artist .

life and work

Andy Mann grew up in Yonkers and joined the United States Navy in 1965 . He was a sonar technician on various submarines , where he developed a new perspective on the medium of video .

From 1969 to 1973 Mann studied at New York University . Andy Mann's first video recordings are from 1969. The "Street tapes" from the New York era are his most famous videos. Since 1976 he has taught video tape technology at the University of California, San Diego .

Mann was a member of Videofreex , Perception, TVTV (video collective) , Global Village and Raindance. He is a regular contributor to Radical Software , a video art magazine published in 1970, and filmed performances by Hannah Wilke and Chris Burden . He interviewed Phil Ochs , Mark Lombardi and Fennie Shakur.

He was a producer for Access Houston Kabel and presented a live video art program there.
