In 1962 Mate won the German American Soccer League with the Hungarians and the Lamar Hunt US Open Cup , in the final of which he scored two of the three goals; In September 1962, the midfielder was part of an all-star team that played a total of eighteen games against club and national teams in the Middle East. In the first round of the 1963 CONCACAF Champions' Cup , Mate scored all five goals for New York Hungaria in two games against the Mexican club Oro de Jalisco . In 1963 he moved to the Colombian club Deportivo Cali , but returned to New York after a short time.
