Schmidt-Foster first appeared internationally at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid . There she took 29th place over 5 km, 23rd place over 10 km and eighth place with the relay. In January 1982 she ran her first World Cup individual race in La Bresse , which she finished in 13th place over 5 km. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Oslo in 1982 she achieved 19th place over 10 km and at the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, 39th place over 5 km and 36th place over 10 km. In the 1986/87 season she achieved her only podium finish in the World Cup singles in Canmore with third place over 10 km classic and her best overall result with 20th place in the overall World Cup. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in 1987 in Oberstdorf , she came in 14th place over 10 km classic. Her best placings at the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary were 32nd place over 5 km classic and ninth place with the relay. At the Nordic World Ski Championships in Lahti in 1989 , she ran to 21st place over 10 km classic, 18th place over 15 km classic and eighth place with the relay and at the Nordic World Ski Championships 1991 in Val di Fiemme on 18th place. Place over 15 km classic, 17th place over 5 km classic and 11th place with the relay. She completed her last international competition at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville . There she finished 51st place in the pursuit race, 39th place over 5 km classic, 29th place over 15 km classic and 11th place with the relay.
