Angellore is a French gothic metal band. The band was named after the song of the same name from the album Widow's Weeds by the band Tristania .

history

Rosarius and Walran met online in March 2007 when Walran read a review written by Rosarius . In July 2007, both of them met for the first time during the Avignon Festival and decided to make the idea of founding a band a reality, which had been rather jokingly expressed up to then.

The Ambrosia demo was written and recorded in August 2007. Rosarius provided the guitars while Walran acted as producer. Keyboard and vocals were taken over by both. Despite good production, the quality of the demo turned out to be poor, according to the members. Nevertheless, it helped them split up with Merankorii , which came out in 2009.

In the meantime, the band recorded two more EPs, Les Promesses de l'Aube and Elégies aux Ames Perdues . The positive criticism received prompted Walran and Rosarius to take the next step. In the fall of 2009 they accepted drummer Ronnie, a school friend of Walran's, into the band, and together with session musician Catherine Arquez, they began recording their first album, Erances , in late 2009 . It was released in 2012 as a digital version and in 2013 as a CD on the French label DreamCell11 and received both good, mixed and negative reviews. In August 2015, Shunu Records released the album La Litanie des Cendres , which received ratings similar to its predecessor. On February 14, 2020, the band's third studio album with Rien Ne Devait Mourir was released on the Finisterian Dead End label , with an official video for the song Dreams (Along The Trail) being released on YouTube .

Style and judgment

The band calls their music and style "Atmospheric Doom Metal" and presents itself slowly and melodically. In addition to electric guitar, electric bass, drums and keyboard, the instrumentation also includes an acoustic guitar and a violin ; In addition, high clear vocals, as suffering associated baritone singing and death grunts are combined, whereby the latter "are not too coarse, sometimes also appear a bit breathy." On Nocturnal Hall, however, the band is certified a coherent Gothic-Metal overall picture, which, however, is characterized by little independence be.

“When the violin is crying, My Dying Bride immediately comes to mind, with dark, clear vocals you can't avoid Moonspell and Type O Negative . Katatonia are involved in the arrangements , and yes, the feminine-sounding clear vocals are also on board ... All right? Originality is certainly not the top priority at ANGELLORE. "

- Nocturna Hall

A lack of independence in Gothic Metal, with similar references to well-known performers, is also seen by the online magazine The Pit, which also sees the debut as a “search for a useful middle ground between pomp and heaviness”. The opulent arrangements of the debut album are sometimes perceived as overloaded and imprecise, so that the Gothic part is described in the critics as "synonymous with kitsch". In terms of content, topics such as suffering, fantasy stories, death, love and the beauty of nature are dealt with.

Angellore name representatives of Gothic Metal , such as the early Tristania and My Dying Bride , as well as representatives of Funeral Doom , such as Shape of Despair and Epic Doom such as While Heaven Wept , as their most important style influences and explain that the musical concept on Tristania in particular is due. Comparisons to My Dying Bride and Moonspell are made in related reviews to categorize the style.

On Musikreviews.de, based on the representatives of Gothic Metal, the band is certified as having a good approach, which, however, is experienced as "too shy" on the debut album.

"With" Errance ", ANGELLORE has made a great debut that every friend of the somewhat out-of-fashion variety should enjoy."
