Angelo Walther

Angelo Walther (born November 6, 1928 in Burkhardtsdorf ) is a German art historian and curator of the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister .

Life

Walther comes from the Saxon Ore Mountains , where he was born as the son of the academic painter Richard Walther in Burkhardtsdorf, south of Chemnitz . From 1937 to 1947 he attended secondary school, then he worked as a new teacher until 1953. He then began studying art history and archeology at the Universities of Rostock and Leipzig, which he completed with a diploma in 1957. At the same time he passed the state examination for high school art educators.

After spending a year at the municipal art collections in Görlitz , he went to the Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister in Dresden as curator, where he was most recently deputy director responsible for the Italian paintings. His volume on the Old Masters Picture Gallery in Dresden saw numerous editions and was translated into several foreign languages.

In 1993 Angelo Walther retired from active professional life, but remained active as a book author.

In 1961 Angelo Walther received his doctorate on August Gaul .
