The Anifer Alterbach rises next to the confluence of the Königseeache in the Salzach south of Anif Castle . In historical times the Oberau spread to the east. To the east of the moated castle Anif was the Mitterau, where the brook in the Golser Au, at the height of Hellbrunn , flows into the Salzach.

During the construction of Hellbrunn Palace , Anifer Alterbach was included in the park design and called Fischwasser St. Franziskus here . The section of the stream was part of the near-natural religious park at the southern end of the castle park and thus a counterpart to the artistic water areas and water features in the north.

The kingfisher can be seen here all year round. The gray heron , of which a chronicler reports around 1925, has also nested here for centuries, and gray herons are breeding here again today.

Today the Anifer Alterbach is probably the most natural flowing water in the area of the Salzburg basin .
