style

Animals as Leaders play instrumental progressive metal on the album , which is dominated by Abasi's virtuoso and varied guitar playing. He covers "the bandwidth between undistorted, Latin- like string plucking, lively, fast solos and brutal riffs almost completely". Occasionally, some keyboard effects are used and the rhythms are complexly programmed. Influences from Djent , Space Rock , Jazz and Electronic Music are noticeable; comparisons are made with Meshuggah , Cynic , Pelican , Liquid Tension Experiment , Steve Vai and Joe Satriani .

reception

The album was largely positively received by the press. Mike Borrink from Rock Hard says: “What Abasi conjures up on his seven or eight strings is really fantastic, but the album remains largely emotionless, although pleasing melodies are interspersed again and again.” Also with Kai Lorenz Kruppa from Babyblauen Seiten Therefore, the album leaves “an ambivalent impression”, but Nik Brückner praises: “Above all, it is the omnipresent intelligence of the musicians involved that inspires you so much when you listen. Nothing is neglected here at the expense of other elements: virtuosity has its place, but also melody and taste. ”The eclipsed magazine included Animals as Leaders in its list of prog metal milestones.
