Reflux was an American metalcore and progressive metal band from Washington, DC that was formed in 2002 and disbanded in 2006.

history

The band was founded in March 2002 by singer Ash Avildsen and guitarist Tosin Abasi. After John Mehoves joined the band as the second singer, Tim Walls as bassist and Steve Clifford as drummer, the first appearances followed. In October 2004, the debut album The Illusion of Democracy followed on Prosthetic Records . Mehoves had meanwhile left the band because he had permanently injured his vocal cords while recording the album. On the album, the group consisted of singer Avildsen and guitarist Abasi, drummer Vince Vinh, bassist Evan Brewer and keyboardist Chris Dowhan. Andreas Magnusson worked as a producer . In January and February 2005, the band played with Calico System , The Warriors and Deadsoil in North America . In April and May the group performed with Strapping Young Lad , The Agony Scene and Misery Index in the US and Canada . This was followed by a summer tour through the USA together with On Broken Wings , From a Second Story Window and Ion Dissonance . In December the band played with Ed Gein , Animosity and August Burns Red . In 2006 the band announced that they would be on hiatus but would not break up. She also announced that a new album would be released in 2007. However, this has still not happened. Instead, Avildsen founded the Sumerian Records label , while Tosin Abasi founded Animals as Leaders .

style

The band plays technically demanding metal on the album The Illusion of Democracy , with guitar work reminiscent of groups like Meshuggah , The Dillinger Escape Plan and Strapping Young Lad . Occasionally, influences from bands like Cynic and Death can also be heard. The music can be described as technically demanding, progressive metalcore, in which melodic and chaotic parts are mixed and the use of sweep picking and unusual time signature is characteristic. The texts on The Illusion of Democracy are of a political nature and deal with unjustified wars, political-economic conspiracies and George W. Bush .
