Anitha Thampi
Anitha Thampi (അനിത തമ്പി malayāḷaṁ ) (born 1968 in Kerala ) is an Indian poet and translator who writes her poems in the Malayalam language.
life and work
Anitha Thampi grew up as the eldest of three daughters in Kerala and experienced the change in Kerala from a more rural region to an urban environment in her childhood and youth. To date she has published two volumes of poetry. Her debut volume Muttamatikkumbol (Sweeping the Courtyard) , published in 2004, was named the best volume of poetry of the year by the Mathrubhumi newspaper . The follow-up volume Azhakillathavayellam (All that are bereft of beauty) was published in 2010. Her poems are characterized by the clarity of the images and their liveliness. A bilingual edition in Malayalam and English with poems by Les Murray transcribed by her was published in 2007 under the title Kavithakal . The translation was supported by the Australia-India Council (AIC), an Australian government organization. The book launch took place in Kochi , a city Les Murray visited in 2006.
Her own poems have been translated into several European languages ( English , French , German and Swedish ) as well as into other Indian languages ( Tamil , Kannada , Bengali , Marathi , Hindi , Assamese , Oriya and Gujarati ). The transmissions have been published in magazines and anthologies. In Germany, her poems were best known as part of the Goethe-Institut's translation project Versschmuggel , in which she appeared at a reading on World Poetry Day in Berlin in 2016 . Some texts were translated into Welsh in 2011 as part of the Wales Arts International / British Council's Writers' Chain project .
In addition to poetry, Anitha Thampi also writes song texts for film productions. She wrote several lyrics for the film Kanyaka Talkies , which debuted at the Mumbai Film Festival in 2013 and opened the 44th International Film Festival of India .
Anitha Thampi lives in Mumbai and Thiruvananthapuram .
