Instructions on how to be conservative

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Instructions for being conservative is a non-fiction book published by Alexander Gauland , then editor of the Märkische Allgemeine Zeitung , in 2002 in the Deutsche Verlags-Anstalt (DVA) .

content

The author paints a subjective picture of political conservatism in Germany. He first describes the strained relationship between conservatives and National Socialism , then goes into the rejection of the German idea of the nation state . The historical figures Edmund Burke and Friedrich the Great take up a large part of the book . Gauland subsequently criticized the lack of symbols of a nation and the lack of history in Germany. Both the economy and the bourgeoisie are no longer what they used to be, and concepts such as family , home , dominant culture , tradition and art are no longer of decisive importance for political rights and are in part occupied by other actors. After a description of conservative German foreign policy and relations with other countries, Gauland finally calls for a slowing down of the technologically advanced society.

Reviews

The political scientist Jens Hacke reviewed for H-Soz-u-Kult : “A culture-critical gesture permeates his entertaining essay, in which he complains about the loss of validity of values, ideas and traditions. He opposes the essentially optimistic traditionalists of modernity of the no longer so “skeptical generation” in an old-conservative way [...] Gauland varies all of the current conservative editorial topoi in his writing and with his plea for historical sense and caution in handling no surprising fragrance brands with religion and tradition. However, since everything remains general, it is seldom clear what the task of the conservative today could be. "

The time journalist Richard Herzinger sees the book as a "contemplative worldview essay".

Norbert Seitz stated in the Tagesspiegel : “As thoughtful as his warnings may be, Gauland doesn't care enough about drawing the line between desirable stability and detrimental incrustation. For his position that its results are so durable precisely because of the low rate of change in German politics, there is no longer any party available ”.

The Berlin literary criticism quotes Ulrich Speck's résumé from the Frankfurter Rundschau : “The author counteracts the encouraging yellow of the book cover in the text with dark colors and apocalyptic tones. Anyone who wants to revive conservatism as a political force in the twenty-first century must offer more than a record of losses and an abysmal aversion to the fun society . "
