Klara Emma Auguste Anna Freiin von Welck (born October 24, 1865 in Groß Krauschen , † April 13, 1925 in Salzwedel ) was abbess of the Drübeck Monastery .

Life

Anna Freiin von Welck was born as one of twelve children on October 24, 1865 in Groß Krauschen near Bunzlau into the von Welck family. Her father was the royal Saxon lieutenant Heinrich Freiherr von Welck, son and heir of Curt Robert von Welck , owner of the Riesa manor in Saxony, her mother Catharine Countess von Schlieffen, a sister of the later Chief of the General Staff Alfred Graf von Schlieffen .

Anna grew up in Riesa and Dresden and from 1892 to 1903 was lady-in-waiting of the Hereditary Grand Duchess Pauline of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach in Weimar.

In June 1903 she became abbess of the Drübeck monastery in the northern Harz. As abbess, she successfully campaigned for a radical reform of traditional monastic life. In this way, the monastery made a practical contribution to solving the pressing problem of the social uprooting of many women, which caused the industrialization of Germany in the second half of the 19th century.

In 1906 Kaiser Wilhelm II presented her with the abbess's staff that he had donated to the Drübeck Abbey. Shortly afterwards, in February 1907, Anna Freiin von Welck left the monastery and married the Prussian Major General Bernhard von der Schulenburg . She spent her last years as the last mistress of old Probstey in Salzwedel, where she died on April 13, 1925.
