Musical career

Purrkur Pillnikk

He made his first musical steps in 1981 in the Icelandic punk band Purrkur Pillnikk . Musically, the band had dedicated themselves to the typical three-chord sound; Even then, Einar Örn's eccentric singing was a trademark of the band.

KUKL

In 1983 he played together with Björk in the avant-garde punk band KUKL . The band stood out for their uncompromising sound and moved stylistically close to the Einstürzende Neubauten .

The Sugarcubes

As the singer of the Sugarcubes, he was controversial. He often drew attention to himself through bizarre spoken phrases or "wrong" singing, drowning out Björk's song, which is popular with the audience. Other critics, however, saw his contributions as an important part of the unconventional, anarchic music of the band.

The Sugarcubes disbanded in 1992. Einar then wrote a column in a newspaper and also worked as a bartender. During this time, music took a back seat for him. He later said: “I was discovering other things, like family life. I wanted to make music a hobby again ”.

other projects

In 1987 Einar Örn undertook his first excursions into synthetic soundscapes, together with ex-soft cell keyboardist Dave Ball and the background singer Rose McDowall, he released a single called No Pain under the project name Ornamental.

In 1992 he founded the short-lived Frostbite project with Hilmar Örn Hilmarsson (HÖH), the experimental electronic sounds of the only album The Second Coming represent a stark contrast to Einar Örn's previously rock-oriented work.

In 1999 there was another collaboration with HÖH, this time under the name Grindverk, where an old bandmate, Sigtryggur Baldursson, was also on board. Grindverk's music is purely instrumental and very experimental, somewhere between free jazz and world music.

Together with Blur's front man Damon Albarn , Einar Örn contributed the soundtrack to the film 101 Reykjavík in 2000 .

Ghostigital

In December 2003 Einar Örn formed the band Ghostigital together with the musician Curver. Ghostigital's music is characterized by very hard electronic sounds, which are often accompanied by old-school hip-hop beats, and, in addition to Einar Örn's idiosyncratic vocals, are now and again accompanied by a real rapper. Ghostigital is Einar Örn's most consistent project so far, which is also suitable for various remixes and the like. a. committed to Björk.

sexuality

In 1989 a report in the media caused a lot of confusion in which it was claimed that Einar and his bandmate Bragi Ólafsson , who were also male, had formed a marriage-like alliance in Denmark . This has been called the first official marriage among gay musicians. However, no further evidence of a relationship between the two could be released. The hoax apparently arose from employees of the band's music label misinterpreting a casual remark that the relationship between the two musicians was an ideal basis for a marriage. The label then published a press release in which they congratulated the musicians on their marriage without actually checking the information.

useful information

Einar Örn founded the Icelandic independent label Gramm together with Ásmundur Jónsson in the early 1980s, from which the label Smekkleysa later emerged.

He also worked as a promoter of concerts (e.g. for two shows by Björk, or for The Prodigy , Fugees and Massive Attack ). He also founded the first cybercafe in Reykjavík , the Siberia Cafe, together with partners . Apparently this project was unsuccessful: “We were too early. Those who knew what it was all about preferred to do their Internet hacking at home ".

Einar Örn is the father of the musician Kaktus of the Icelandic EinDub / Experimental duo Captain Fufanu .
