Pauline of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach
Pauline Ida Marie Olga Henriette Catharina von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (born July 25, 1852 in Stuttgart ; † May 17, 1904 in Orte ) was Princess of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach and Duchess of Saxony and, through marriage, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Saxe-Weimar- Eisenach.
Life
Pauline was the eldest child of Prince Hermann of Saxe-Weimar-Eisenach (1825–1901). Through his marriage to Auguste (1826–1898), the youngest daughter of King Wilhelm I of Württemberg and his entry into the royal Württemberg army, he founded the so-called Württemberg line of the House of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach.
Pauline married Hereditary Grand Duke Karl August von Sachsen-Weimar-Eisenach (1844-1894) on August 26, 1873 in Friedrichshafen , her second cousin. The wedding date had been postponed; originally it was planned to have the world premiere of the opera Aida outside of Italy in Weimar on the occasion of the wedding .
Pauline's husband died before his father, which is why Pauline's older son followed in 1901 as Grand Duke of Saxony-Weimar-Eisenach. Under her patronage, one of the oldest kindergartens in the area was opened in Ramsla in 1901 , the “Paulinenstift”. As the last member of the House of Saxony-Weimar, Pauline lived in Belvedere Palace in Weimar until her death . She was buried in the Weimar Princely Crypt.
The Paulinenturm , which is the landmark of the city of Bad Berka, is named after her . Five songs from Joseph Victor von Scheffel's Trumpeter von Säckingen (op. 45) are dedicated to Pauline.
progeny
Pauline had two sons from their marriage:
