Life

Anna Karbe was the daughter of Hermann Karbe Kgl. Prussia. Councilor and tenant of Gramzow / Uckermark and his wife Mathilde Hengstenberg. She was a niece of the theology professor Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg and an aunt of the local poet Walter Karbe .

She seriously injured her spine in a fall at the age of seven. Her life was strongly shaped by worry and suffering, which is also reflected in her poetry. Three of her siblings died early and when she was twelve her mother died.

Anna Karbe was brought up and shaped in a Prussian, conservative and Christian way. She didn't go to school; she taught herself to read and received occasional lessons from the local pastors or tutors.

On February 18, 1873 Karbe married in Bad Freienwalde (Oder) her cousin, the manor owner of Lichterfelde, Johannes (Hans) Karbe (1844-1919).

Their daughter Mathilde was born on October 30, 1874 and died on November 14, 1874.

Anna Karbe died on April 19, 1875 and is buried in the churchyard in Lichterfelde in the Karbe family grave.

Her parents and siblings who died as children are buried in the Karbe family funeral in Gramzow.

Services

Her feelings, sentiments and hopes processed in her poems were not intended for the public. Anna Karbe referred to her poetry as “ kitchen songs ”.

The literary researcher and pedagogue Philipp Wackernagel became aware of her literary talent after reading her diaries and published several of her songs.

Until the 1930s there were new editions of Anna Karbe's poems. In 1931 one of her songs became part of the Evangelical Hymn book for Brandenburg and Pomerania .

Appreciations

To commemorate her artistic and local significance, a memorial stone was set up in Gramzow / Uckermark, the Anna-Karbe-Schule and Anna-Karbe-Straße are named in her honor.
