Anna von Wahl ( Russian Анна Эдуардовна Вааль ; born February 26, 1861 in Saint Petersburg , † September 11, 1938 in Fürstenfeldbruck ) was a German-Baltic painter, draftsman and illustrator.

Life

Von Wahl came from the widespread German-Baltic noble family Wahl , which was based in Estonia . From it came landowners, scientists, officers in German and Russian services, but also numerous artists.

She was the daughter of Eduard Georg von Wahl , who had been resident in St. Petersburg since 1860 and was appointed professor of surgery at the University of Dorpat (today: Tartu ) from 1876 , and his wife Marie Elisabeth, née von Bunge (1834–1909 ). From 1878 to 1880 she studied at the Imperial Art Academy in St. Petersburg and then at the Académie Colarossi in Paris with Gustave Courtois and Raphaël Collin . From 1883 to 1888 she worked in the studio of the court painter Mihály Zichy in St. Petersburg. She took part in the exhibitions of the Imperial Academy and was awarded a medal in 1887 for her composition of a horse stable. In 1888 she attended the nude class at the Academy of Arts in Berlin with Franz Skarbina and M. Klein (probably Max Klein ). She went on study trips within Germany, England and Italy. After her father died in an accident in 1890, the artist lived again in Dorpat, which belonged to the Russian Empire , and since 1896 in Berlin, where she belonged to the Association of Berlin Women Artists. In 1913 she settled in Fürstenfeldbruck , where she died unmarried at the age of 77. She was buried in the old Bruck cemetery. The neighboring municipality of Eichenau named the Anna-von-Wahl-Weg after her.

Anna von Wahl created figurative compositions, portraits, interiors and landscapes in oil painting, watercolors and drawings, as well as illustrations for children's books and magazines, posters and book owner's marks ( ex-libris ). Her work was highly valued during her lifetime, but her illustrations in particular are more likely to be perceived as "sweet" today.
