The Gothic Anna chapel north of the parish church of St. Johann im Pongau was originally a charnel house in which the bones found when graves were removed were kept.

history

The Anna Chapel is a two-story church. The original construction dates from the 9th century; it was slowly covered by soil and therefore a second floor (the church room used today) was added around 1340. According to the church consecration register of Bishop Berthold vom Chiemsee , on the last July 1520 ... the upper and lower death chapel ("carnarium superioris et inferius") with two altars at the church of the St. Johann market in Pongow was consecrated . In a location description from 1867 it says: The Atarstein contains the year 1301. She donated a beautiful altar by Wolf Flockhammer in 1623 and two bells from 1627 and 1729.

From 1623 the chapel was the seat of the Corpus Christi brotherhood . Until the market fire of 1855 there was an altar of the fourteen helpers in the lower church . The altar, bells, frescoes and the small roof turret fell victim to this fire. Since the parish church of St. Johann was also burned down, the chapel was used as an emergency church. The construction forge was set up in the lower church. In 1877 it was thought to demolish the chapel and use the demolition material to enclose the parish church and the cemetery. However, in 1882 the church was renamed and the 14-station Way of the Cross was consecrated.

Construction

The lower church of the Anna chapel is supported by an early Gothic ribbed vault . In the upper church, a ribbed vault from the 16th century forms the ceiling construction.

A vegetable kiosk was built on the north side of the chapel until the 1950s, and the lower church served as a storage room and vegetable cellar. From 1962, the chapel was renovated from a historical perspective. The built-in glass windows come from the artist Ludwine Wildner-Eltz; the west side round window depicts the expulsion of Zacharias from the temple of Jerusalem , the east side shows the motif Anna Selbdritt , in the south side window the marriage of Mary with the Holy Spirit is depicted. The altar was created by the stonemason Heinrich Mayer from Salzburg, the stone comes from Rainberg , the altar plate is made of Untersberg marble . To the right and left of the altar are statues of St. Dominic and St. Catherine of Siena . In the church there is also a sculpture from around 1530 depicting Emperor Heinrich and his wife Kunigunde .

From 1980 the Anna chapel was renovated jointly by the Roman Catholic parish and the Protestant parish with shared costs, and since then it has been used by both religious communities for church services. At that time the roof was covered with an Eternit double covering, the old entrance was reopened and the floor was renewed. 1999–2000 the lower church and outer facade were renewed. The lower church used as a vegetable cellar was cleared out and drained, the ribbed vault was renewed and a heated floor was installed. A fresco by the Carinthian painter Switbert Lobisser was attached to the outer facade .
