The Annapurna IV is a 7525 m high peak in the mountain range Annapurna Himal in the Himalayas in Nepal .
The summit is located on a ridge that connects the 3.81 km further east, 7937 m high Annapurna II with the Annapurna III ( 7555 m ) in the west. The main peak of the massif, the 8091 m high Annapurna I, rises further to the west . The headwaters of the Seti Gandaki are located on the western flank of Annapurna IV. Machapucharé rises on the opposite side of the gorge .
Ascent history
In the early 1950s there were several attempts to climb it. In 1950 an expedition led by Bill Tilman reached an altitude of about 7,315 m .
In 1952 a Japanese group of mountaineers tried their hand at Annapurna IV and reached an altitude of about 5791 m .
The first ascent was finally achieved by a German expedition led by Heinz Steinmetz in 1955. On May 30, 1955, the German mountaineers Heinz Steinmetz, Harald Biller and Jürgen Wellenkamp reached the summit. They chose the same ascent route as Tilman five years earlier, the so-called "Tilman Route". This leads from the north up the Sobje Khola river valley and over the west ridge to the summit. Other participants in the expedition were Manfred Bachmann and Fritz Lobbichler .
