The Annapurna III ( nepali : अन्नपूर्ण Annapurna ) is a seven-thousand in the Himalayas in Nepal . At 7555  m , Annapurna III is the 42nd highest mountain on earth.

Surname

Annapurna is a double word from Sanskrit . The name is another name for the goddess Parvati ("the mountain daughter") - in various mythologies also identical with the goddesses Durga ("the inaccessible") and Kali ("the black one"). The name of the mountain is made up of anna ("food") and purna ("filled with"). Annapurna is thus "the nourishing goddess" or "the goddess of abundance". The name is also in the German one feminine .

Location and topography

Annapurna III is the third highest mountain in the Annapurna Himal . This mountain range extends in a west-east direction and consists of several independent mountains. Annapurna III is a central peak in the main ridge of Annapurna I ( 8091  m ), which leads from the west . In the north-westerly direction , the Gangapurna ( 7455 m ) is in the immediate vicinity, separated by a 6892  m high notch  . Annapurna IV and Annapurna II follow further east . The 6997  m high Machapucharé connects to the southern ridge of Annapurna III .

First ascent

The first ascent of Annapurna III was achieved as part of an Indian army expedition led by Capt. Mohan Singh Kohli. After an unsuccessful first Indian attempt to climb Mount Everest , the Indian Mountaineering Foundation decided to support three expeditions in 1961. One goal of these expeditions was to climb the unclimbed , 7555 m high summit of Annapurna III from Manang over the northeast face  . On May 6, 1961, a rope team around Mohan Singh Kohli, Sonam Gyatso, and Sonam Girmi was able to stand on the summit of Annapurna III.

In 1970 a Japanese expedition boarded the Annapurna III. For the first time an all women team was able to reach a high peak.
