The Skilfish (Anoplopomatidae) are a two species comprehensive fish family from the suborder Cottoidei . Recently they were assigned to their own sub-order, the anoplopomatales . As such, they are the sister group of all the remaining Cottoidei. They live in the North Pacific from Japan to Alaska to California .

features

Skilfish are 1.20 ( Anoplopoma fimbria ) or 1.80 ( Erilepis zonifer ) meters long and have an elongated, laterally slightly flattened body, which is covered with very small comb scales. Your head is not bribed. The teeth are small and numerous. In addition to the jaw, the palatine bone and the ploughshare bone are also dentate. The gill membranes have grown together at the isthmus ("throat"). The number of Branchiostegal rays is 6 to 7. Of the two dorsal fins , the first has 12 to 30 hard rays , the second one or two hard rays and 15 to 21 soft rays. The anal fin , which sits symmetrically opposite the second dorsal fin, has 2 to 3 hard and 11 to 20 soft rays. The spines of the second dorsal fin and the anal fin are very small and embedded in the skin. The small, throat-shaped pelvic fins have one hard and five soft rays. There are two clearly visible nostrils on each side of the head. The sideline is complete. The number of vertebrae is 45 to 66. There is no swim bladder .

Way of life

Skilfish live as adult fish near the bottom at depths of up to 680 or 2700 meters. Young fish live closer to the sea surface. They predatorily feed on other fish, cephalopods , crustaceans and worms.

use

They are important edible fish , although the meat of Erilepis zonifer has a laxative effect due to its high oil content.
