Anorexia Nervosa is a French extreme metal band from Limoges , Haute-Vienne , named after the mental disorder of the same name .

history

The band was founded in 1995 by former members of the death metal band Necromancia. Founding members are Stéphane Gerbaud, Stefan Bayle, Marc Zabé, Pier Couquet and Nilcas Vant. After a short time in October 1995, the band produced the demo Nihil Negativum , two years later the first album, Exile , on Season of Mist .

In 1999 singer Hreidmarr and keyboardist Neb Xort joined the recordings for the EP Sodomizing the Archedangel for Anorexia Nervosa, which was originally intended as a demo recording, but was released by the owner of Osmose Productions . and a little later in 2000 the second album Drudenhaus . In the opening act for Cradle of Filth , Anorexia Nervosa reached a larger audience. The third album New Obscurantis Order was released in 2001. The fourth and final album Redemption Process was released in 2004 after the band had worked on it for three years.

Singer Hreidmarr announced on December 20, 2005 that he was separating from the band without a fight. About nine months later, on September 18, 2006, Stefan Bayle announced via the website that the Anorexia Nervosa project is in a crisis due to Hreidmarr's exit and is on hold, but there is no question of liquidation.

style

On the demo recording Nihil Negativum and the debut album Exile , the band played a different style, which they described on their side as "a kind of rather experimental Goth-Industrial"; Nihil Negativum contains quiet post-industrial pieces such as Le patient est isolé or Quelque chose comme l'idée qu'il n'aurait mieux pas fallu naître , such as In a Brown Gnostic Study , which is based on industrial metal and this with death -Growls connect, and from time to time guitar sounds inspired by Gothic Rock can be heard , like with Anamorphic effect: the revival .

The musical development on Drudenhaus was felt by some listeners to be illogical and not sincere. According to Robert Müller from Metal Hammer “the sound is right” in contrast to the previous recordings; the keyboards "could be a little more subtle and the breaks a little less overdone, but they convey the apparently desired impression of an orgiastic orgiastic fatas orgy, driven amok driven by vehement riff attacks". Nevertheless, “[t] the conclusion […] Cradle Of Filth comes out without Dani's crazy vocals and with less opulent sound power overall, but Anorexia Nervosa are now one of the more pleasant among all the cradle clones. Their will for decadent splendor folds is unmistakable, and the spark of madness flashes mischievously between the marching steel thunderstorms. ”With this album, the band was able to establish itself in France, while remaining largely unknown abroad.

While Robert Müller wrote that Anorexia Nervosa should "[o] ptically and also from the cited influences [...] be viewed more as an outsider in the metal underground", the music on Sodomizing the Archedangel is "one with horrific drums and plenty of rhythm. Sauce [sic!] With a Cradle Of Filth adaptation that neither really helps the Black Metal nor the Gothic scene . Sure, the COF comparison ignores some of the ideas in the four songs, but there is no question of innovation or convincing quality. ”Accordingly, according to his colleague Stefan Müller, they were long“ cheap copies of the trendsetter groups in Black Metal. Sector decried ”. On New Obscuranti's order , the band put on a fat production. The orchestral passages "sound [...] deceptively real, the rock instruments appear powerful and differentiated". The album was produced by the band itself, whose line-up includes two sound engineers . With this album, according to Müller, the band stepped out of the shadow of Dimmu Borgir .

During the work on Redemption Process , the band changed, according to the singer Hreidmarr, "a few things: our record company, the recording technology and especially our way of composing [...] Now all band members contribute to the songs, and we added more orchestral elements with choirs, for example as well as brass - or Bathory- inspired mid-tempo passages. This creates a dramatic-tragic atmosphere that seems heavier and more emotional than on NEW OBSCURANTIS ORDER, an album that sounded very dark and cold. With REDEMPTION PROCESS we move back into the light. ”While Gunnar Sauermann from Metal Hammer notes that“ light in the dark area is rather frowned upon ”, Hreidmarr says:“ How [sic!] No longer have to systematically spit our hatred in people's faces [...] We needed a breath of fresh air, because with NEW OBSCURANTIS ORDER we had reached the bottom in the abyss of dark decadence. Like DRUDENHAUS (2000 - note dA), REDEMPTION PROCESS represents a turning point and a new beginning in our career. ”Hreidmarr sees the texts as a“ spiritual and physical search for forgiveness. My words stand for a long, hard journey through a dying world to a new [sic!] Light, comparable to the Passion of Christ. ”According to the volume, however, the lyrical concept of salvation is not meant as an apocalypse in the biblical sense; it is "a completely disaffected worldview, more like the foundation of a new religion in the western end times ". Sauermann compared the album with Dimmu Borgir and Cradle of Filth, but the band offers “in addition to cleverly woven orchestral passages and dense keyboard carpets also a powerful shot of well-groomed toughness”; Redemption Process captivates "with a consistently transparent sound, compact songs and catchy, gripping melodies". The lyrics to Worship Manifesto comes from Aleister Crowley .

According to their own perception, the band does not belong to Black Metal, as they reject “any form of established structures”. “In the beginning, the black scene broke all the rules and produced avant-garde, original music with artistic value. Today Black Metal produces almost nothing but shallow copies and mutates into any trend. We'd rather do our own thing! ”This also includes visual delimitation; the band's guitarist was described in a concert report as a "mixture of Twiggy Ramirez [...] and Wednesday 13 ".
