The attack on the Minsk Metro was a bomb attack on the Minsk Metro on April 11, 2011 , in which 15 people were killed and 204 were injured.

Course of events

About 100 meters from the Kastrychnitskaya metro station (Кастрычніцкая) in Minsk is the main office of the Belarusian President Aljaksandr Lukashenka . In the metro station occurred at about 18:00 a blast . According to the security forces, a remote-controlled bomb prepared with nails and other metal parts was responsible for this.

Convictions

Two suspects, Vladislav Kovalev and Dmitri Konovalov, were arrested and charged with terrorism , among other charges. Both are said to have confessed to further attacks. You were sentenced to death by shooting on November 30, 2011 .

The judgment sparked international criticism. Trial observers did not consider the guilt of the convicts to be proven and criticized that the trial was not fair. The motive is said to have been lust for murder.

Wladislaw Kovalev's lawyer was unable to lodge a complaint with the Supreme Court.

On March 16, 2012, the Supreme Court of Belarus informed the relatives of the convicted in writing that they had been shot in the neck. The state news agency BelTA reported the enforcement of the judgment on March 17, 2012. Numerous European governments as well as the European Union condemned the enforcement and again questioned the rule of law of the proceedings.
