Ebergassing attack

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The attack in Ebergassing was an explosive attack that was carried out on April 11, 1995 in an uninhabited part of the municipality of Ebergassing in Lower Austria .

The alleged perpetrators Peter Konicek and Gregor Thaler tried to interrupt one of the two main power supply lines for Vienna by blowing up the 380 kV high-voltage pylon No. 383 in Ebergassing. However, two of the four explosive devices exploded early due to the high induction voltage and killed the two assassins without, however, damaging the power pole to any major extent.

Background of the attack

The bomb attack in Ebergassing was directed against the transmission of nuclear power across Austrian territory. The high-voltage line against which the attack in Ebergassing was directed is part of a central European nuclear power hub.

Peter Konicek

Peter Konicek (33 years old at the time of the crime), grew up in Ebergassing, was politically active at a young age and involved in the left-wing Viennese scene. First he moved around the “Black Thistle”, an anarchist group , and later around the occupied Ernst-Kirchweger-Haus .

“Konicek openly advocated politicizing and radicalizing people, building resistance and creating an environment for militant action. He repeatedly demanded not to separate the private and the political, not only to discuss anti-fascist and anti-imperialist attitudes in theory, but also to put them into practice. "

Gregor Thaler

Gregor Thaler (time of the crime 29 years old) located in Innsbruck , the machinist apprenticeship made was initially in the punk scene. After completing his apprenticeship, he moved to Vienna and became involved in the left-wing scene, where he also met Peter Konicek.

Suspected third perpetrator

Again and again there was speculation about a third perpetrator who is said to have escaped alive. In this context, the police investigated, among other things, against an Austrian who had been living in Mexico since 1995 and had been searched for by an international arrest warrant. In 2001 he was briefly arrested by the Mexican police because the arrest warrant was still in place. After the arrest, there were protests and appeals for donations in support of the alleged perpetrator. An extradition request by the State of Austria was subsequently rejected by Mexico because the Austrian authorities were unable to provide any solid evidence of complicity. The arrest warrant that served as the basis for the arrest was overturned.

Political Impact

The fact that the assassins were long-time activists of the left scene in Vienna tried, above all, to politically exploit the FPÖ . Liberal politicians presented the attempted attack in Ebergassing as being equivalent to the xenophobic sending of letter bombs , which at that time had already cost four people their lives and had dominated media coverage during the previous weeks. To distract them tried the then Minister of the Interior, the FPÖ Caspar Einem ( SPÖ ) bring near the Ebergassing assassin by a donation to the left - autonomous magazine TATblatt interpreted as insgeheime support of the perpetrators.
