Anson Phelps Stokes (Philanthropist)

Anson Phelps Stokes (born April 13, 1874 in New Brighton, Staten Island , † August 13, 1958 ) was an American educator , historian , pastor , writer , philanthropist and civil rights activist .

Stokes' father was the banker Anson Phelps Stokes , his brothers included the architect Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes , the socialist James Graham Phelps Stokes and the journalist Harold Phelps Stokes .

In 1899, Stokes became Secretary of Yale University and was Assistant Rector of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church in New Haven , Connecticut from 1900 to 1918 . In 1911, he established his philanthropic Phelps Stokes Fund for African Americans.
