Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade

Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade (born  September 17, 1947 in Belo Horizonte ) is a Brazilian lawyer . He served as a judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights from 1995 to 2008 , including President from 1999 to 2004. He has been a judge at the International Court of Justice since 2009 .

Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade was born in Belo Horizonte in 1947 and studied law at the Universidade Federal de Minas Gerais in his hometown until 1969 . He also received an LL.M. degree in international law from the University of Cambridge in 1973 , from which he also received his PhD in 1977 . From 1978 he worked as a professor of international law at the Universidade de Brasília and from 1985 to 1990 as legal advisor to the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs . In the 1980s he represented his home country several times as a delegate at international conferences, and from 1990 he was an advisor to various international organizations and organs of the United Nations (UN) such as the UN Environment Program (UNEP).

From 1995 he worked as a judge at the Inter-American Court of Human Rights , including from 1997 as Vice-President and from 1999 to 2004 as President of the court. In November 2008 he was elected judge at the International Court of Justice in The Hague , where he had previously served as ad hoc judge in a case following nomination by Costa Rica . His nine-year term began in February 2009.

Antônio Augusto Cançado Trindade received the Goler T. Butcher Medal of the American Society for International Law , awarded in 2006 for contributions to the effective implementation of human rights , and in 2008 the Wolfgang Friedmann Memorial Award given by the Faculty of Law at Columbia University for outstanding achievements in the field of international law. He has been a member of the Institut de Droit international since 1997 and of the Board of Trustees of the Hague Academy for International Law since 2004 , where he taught external courses in various Latin American cities in 1987 and 2005 in The Hague and between 1989 and 2008 . He is also a member of the International Institute for Humanitarian Law in San Remo .
