Location of the Anta do Junçal in Portugal.

The Anta do Junçal , also known under the names Anta do Jocel and Anta do Juncal , is a megalithic complex about 5.5 km north of Castelo de Vide in the municipality ( Portuguese Freguesia ) Santiago Maior in the district ( Portuguese Concelho ) Castelo de Vide, district Portalegre in the northeast Alentejo .

Anta , Mámoa , Dolmen , Orca and Lapa are the common names in Portugal for the approximately 5000 megalithic structures that were built during the Neolithic in the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the successors of the Cardial or Imprint culture .

Monument preservation

The Anta was first published in 1975 and cataloged again in 1986 as part of a prospecting . In 2002 and 2003, the first restoration and conservation work was carried out after the complex had been classified as IIP - Imóvel de Interest Público and placed under protection in 1997 . A further archaeological investigation of the site is still pending.

Finding

The site is largely destroyed today. Only a heavily fragmented granite bearing stone ( orthostat ) is preserved in situ . So far there have been no clear indications of a corridor or a hill ( mámoa ) of the tomb, but the pending excavations can correct the picture if necessary.

Despite the poor preservation, the Anta can be dated to the period from the end of the Neolithic to the Copper Age (3500–2000 BC).

Finds

No information is available about any finds in the course of prospecting.
