Location of the Anta do Pai Anes in Portugal.

The Anta do Pai Anes is a megalithic complex about 1.7 km northwest of Póvoa e Meadas , in the municipality ( Portuguese Freguesia ) Nossa Senhora da Graça de Póvoa e Meadas in the district ( Portuguese concelho ) Castelo de Vide , Portalegre district in the northeast Alentejo . The site is on a slight slope about 100 m west of the eponymous Ribeira de Pai Anes .

Anta , Mámoa , Dolmen , Orca and Lapa are the common names in Portugal for the approximately 5000 megalithic structures that were built during the Neolithic in the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the successors of the Cardial or Imprint culture .

Monument preservation

In 1959 the complex was first described by Georg and Vera Leisner and in 1997 it was registered and protected as Imóvel deinterest public . In 1982 the megalithic tomb was examined by the archaeological section of the municipality in an unofficial dig.

The site, which is on private property, is severely disturbed today. With the restoration and conservation measures of 2003, an attempt is made to counteract the further deterioration of the complex.

Finding

The elongated polygonal burial chamber was formerly formed by seven granite bearing stones ( orthostats ) up to 50 cm thick . Six of the bearing stones are still preserved, five of them in situ , albeit slightly displaced from their original position. The capstone of the burial chamber has not been preserved.

The lower part of the first bearing stone is decorated with an elongated notch across the entire width and two concentric dimples near the tip.

So far there has been no evidence of a corridor or a hill ( mámoa ) of the tomb.

Finds

The findings of the investigations have so far been limited to a slate ax .

The dating of the complex can only generally be in the period from the 4th to 3rd millennium BC. Take place.
