Antoni Wiwulski
Antoni Wiwulski ( Lithuanian : Antanas Vivulskis , born February 20, 1877 in Totma near Vologda in the Russian Empire , † January 10, 1919 in Vilnius , Lithuania ) was a Polish - Lithuanian architect and sculptor.
education
Wiwulski attended two of the most prestigious training institutions for architects of the time.
- 1897–1901 he studied at the Technical University in Vienna ;
- 1902–1909 studied at the École Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris .
His better-known works include:
- the monument to Jogaila after the Battle of Tannenberg in Krakow
- the chapel of Šiluva , Lithuania
- the Three Crosses on the Hill of Three Crosses in Vilnius
- the plan for a Church of the Sacred Heart of Jesus in Vilnius
Reinforced concrete was used for the first time in Lithuania for the construction of the latter church, which began in 1913 . Wiwulski was enthusiastic about the possibilities of this newly discovered building material and designed a gigantic church with a gigantic, stylized figure of the creator on the dome . After Wiwulski's death on January 10, 1919, the work was stopped.
Despite suffering from tuberculosis , he had volunteered for the Polish units defending Vilnius against the attack of the Bolsheviks in the early stages of the Polish-Soviet war . On guard, he retired in Vilnius suburb Užupis a pneumonia to. He was buried in the basement of the planned church. When the Soviet Union converted it into a construction workers' palace in 1964, his ashes were reburied in the Rasos cemetery .
