Antas da Valeira
The damaged Antas da Valeira are located in the southern gusset of the intersection of the roads Évora - Montemor and Escoural - Arraiolos in the Alentejo . Anta or dolmen is the Portuguese name for around 5000 megalithic structures that were built during the Neolithic in the west of the Iberian Peninsula by the successors of the cardial or imprint culture .
The two megalithic systems were only recognized as such a few years ago. They are listed in the “Roteiro megalitico” of the city council of Évora under “Guadalupe-Valverde-Tour”. The coexistence of a large and a small Anta is more common in Portugal , without an explanation for it yet. Anta 1 stands between two olive trees and is largely intact, with the remains of the mound but without the capstone. Anta 2 is in the open and is a little more damaged. Excavations were not carried out in Valeira, no findings are known.
There are many dolmens and menhirs in the Évora district and in the area between the intersection of Valeira and the A5 motorway to the south. The cromlech of Portela de Mogos is 3.5 kilometers north of the motorway, in the middle of a cork oak grove, on a hill east of the road . South of the highway is about 800 meters west of the intersection, on the north side between the road to Montemor and the highway the Anta do Patalim .
