Antero Lehtonen (born April 12, 1954 in Tampere ) is a former Finnish ice hockey player who played for the Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League from 1971 to 1987 . His brother Erkki Lehtonen was also a professional ice hockey player.

Career

Antero Lehtonen began his career as a hockey player in his hometown at Tappara Tampere , for whose professional team he was active from 1971 to 1976, first in the SM-sarja and from 1975 in their successor league SM-liiga . With Tappara he won the Finnish championship in the 1974/75 season and was runner-up in 1974 and 1976 with his team. The winger then moved to Tappara's league rivals TPS Turku , with whom he was defeated by his ex-club Tappara in the playoff final in the 1976/77 season. After he had spent the 1978/79 season again in Tampere with Tappara, with whom he was champion for the second time, he signed on September 16, 1979 a contract as a free agent with the Washington Capitals from the National Hockey League . For this he came in the 1979/80 season to nine goals and twelve templates in 65 NHL games. In addition, he was in four games for their farm team , the Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League , on the ice.

After a year in North America, Lehtonen returned to his home club Tappara Tampere, with whom he was runner-up again in 1981. This was followed by another three years at TPS Turku and another runner-up in the 1981/82 season. Finally, the former Finnish international joined the second division JYP HT , with whom he rose straight away in 1985 to the SM-liiga. At JYP he ended his career at the age of 33 following the 1986/87 season.

For Finland Lehtonen took part in the Junior World Championships 1974 , as well as the A-World Championships in 1977 , 1979 and 1981 . At world championships he scored four goals in 25 games in the senior division and gave seven assists.
