Anthony Quainton

Anthony Cecil Eden Quainton (born April 4, 1934 in Seattle , Washington ) is a former American diplomat who was ambassador several times and from 1992 to 1995 Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security .

Life

Quainton attended Phillips Academy in Andover, founded in 1778, and then began an undergraduate degree at Princeton University , which he completed in 1955 with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). After further studies at the University of Oxford , he entered the diplomatic service in 1958.

On February 20, 1976, he replaced William N. Dale as ambassador to the Central African Empire and stayed there until June 9, 1978, whereupon Goodwin Cooke succeeded him on November 4, 1978. He himself then moved to the State Department and was there as Director of the Office for Combating Terrorism in the rank of Assistant Secretary of State successor to Heyward Isham from August 16, 1978 to August 1, 1981. Thereafter, took over He took the post of ambassador to Nicaragua on March 26, 1982 from Lawrence A. Pezzullo and stayed there until May 6, 1984, when Harry E. Bergold, Jr. succeeded him on May 31, 1984.

Quainton then became ambassador to Kuwait on September 19, 1984, successor to Francois M. Dickman , who had been recalled on August 8, 1983 a year earlier. He remained in the post of ambassador until August 14, 1987, which was taken on by W. Nathaniel Howell on September 2, 1987 . He then returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and acted there between 1987 and 1989 as Deputy Inspector General. On December 11, 1989, he replaced Alexander F. Watson as ambassador to Peru and held this position until September 16, 1992. During his service in Peru he escaped an attempted assassination by a car bomb attack.

In 1992 Quainton returned to the State Department in Washington, DC , replacing Sheldon J. Krys from August 13, 1992 until he was replaced by Eric J. Boswell on December 29, 1995, Assistant Secretary of State for Diplomatic Security Diplomatic Security . Most recently, on December 29, 1995, he replaced Genta Hawkins Holmes as Director General of the Foreign Service . He held this office until August 22, 1997, whereupon Edward William Gnehm, Jr. was his successor on August 25, 1997.

Quainton was also involved in the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Academy of Diplomacy . His marriage to Susan Long had three children.
