Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount Falklands

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anthony Cary, 5th Viscount Falkland PC ( February 16, 1656 - May 24, 1694 ) was a Scottish peer and English politician. The Falklandsund was named after him, which in turn gave its name to the entire archipelago of the Falkland Islands .

Falkland's father was Henry Cary, 4th Viscount Falkland . He died in 1663, so that Cary inherited his title.

Cary was several times a member of the Parliament of England between 1685 and 1694 , first 1685–1687 for Oxfordshire , then 1689–1690 for Great Marlow and finally 1690–1694 for Great Bedwyn . This was possible because the title of nobility belonged to the Peerage of Scotland and was not automatically linked to a seat in the House of Lords . He was also responsible for financing the Royal Navy as Treasurer of the Navy from 1681 to 1689 . After he was appointed to the Privy Council in 1692 , Cary was the highest-ranking civilian in the Royal Navy until his death in 1693 as First Lord of the Admiralty .

Cary was married and had a daughter who died before him. His title fell to a second cousin after his death.
