Anthony Philip Harbord-Hamond, 11th Baron Suffield , MC (born June 19, 1922 in London - † December 8, 2011 ) was a British peer and politician of the Conservative Party .

life and career

Harbord-Hamond was born on June 19, 1922 to Admiral Richard Harbord, 10th Baron Suffield (1965-1951) and Nina Crawfuird Hutchinson. The father was an admiral who did not marry until the age of 48 and was 57 when the son was born.

Anthony Harbord-Hamond attended Eton College . After graduating, he joined the Army and became a member of the Coldstream Guards in 1942 . There he served for more than 20 years. He was awarded a Military Cross while witnessing the Malaya uprising there . He then served in England and Germany . In 1961 or 1964 he left military service.

He was engaged in farming in Binham . Harbord-Hamond was also known as a watercolourist for his works of landscapes and country houses in Norfolk . In 1989 an exhibition of his works in London was a great success.

In 1977 he became president of the Norfolk County Cricket Club .

From 1973 to 1992 he was a member of the Honorable Corps of Gentlemen-at-Arms , the Queen's Bodyguard.

Membership in the House of Lords

After the death of his father in February 1951, he inherited his title Baron Suffield and the then associated seat in the House of Lords . There he represented the Conservative Party . He gave his inaugural address on November 19, 1963 for Address In Reply To Her Majesty's Most Gracious Speech .

He spoke up irregularly. He spoke about the army in 1965 . It wasn't until 1984 that he spoke up again, twice on the Health and Social Security Bill . Two years later he spoke on the Building Societies Bill . In 1989 he spoke twice about the possible registration of dogs. It was not until 1993 that he expressed himself there again in a written reply. He last spoke there in January 1995.

He lost his seat through the House of Lords Act 1999 .

Family and death

On January 16, 1952, Harbord-Hamond married Elizabeth Eve Edgedale († 1995). He has four children with her, including three sons and one daughter.

He died on December 8, 2011 at the age of 89. His eldest son inherited his title as Charles Anthony Assheton Harbord-Hamond, 12th Baron Suffield (* 1953). Disputes within the family became apparent shortly after his death.
