Antide Janvier (1751-1835)

Antide Janvier (born July 1, 1751 in Briva, Lavans-lès-Saint-Claude , † September 23, 1835 in Paris ) was a French watchmaker and specialist writer.

Life and horological achievement

Janvier was born in Briva, a village in the French Jura department , and learned the basics of the watchmaking trade from his father, who recognized his talent and encouraged him. He was tutored in Latin, Greek, math, and astronomy by a local abbot. At the age of fifteen, he constructed an armillary sphere , which he presented to the Academy of Sciences in Besançon and which there met with great admiration. After his training, he often stayed in Morez .

He quickly gained reputation as a manufacturer of complex and difficult watches in the highest quality, including many clocks , globes , astronomical clocks , spheres and planetariums , for which he invented new gear and constructions. In 1775 and 1784 he stayed in Paris and Versailles to give his work to the kings Louis XV. and Louis XVI. to introduce. During the French Revolution he spent a lot of time in prison because of these royal connections and then ran into financial hardship as much of his work was not paid for. In 1802 he opened a school for clockmaking. After the reestablishment of the monarchy under Charles X , he was awarded a small pension in 1826, but died forgotten and in complete poverty.
