General
Antigua is one of the oldest communities on the island. The central location was temporarily the capital of the island in the 19th century; Puerto del Rosario replaced it in 1835. Before immigrants from mainland Spain settled here in the second half of the 16th century, Antigua was part of the parish of Betancuria . Two centuries later, the Antigua parish broke away from Betancuria and became an independent parish. A windmill and some mansions are evidence of the place's earlier importance. The blue and white Art Nouveau villa from around 1900 is particularly striking.
Worth seeing
- The church Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Antigua dates from the 18th century; it has a Mudejar-style wooden ceiling made from Canarian pine . A fiesta in honor of the patron saint is held at the beginning of September.
- Centro de Artesanía in the Molino de Antigua ; one of the windmills that ensured economic prosperity has housed a handicraft center with exhibitions since 1997. Every year in May, there is a craft fair, Feria Insular de Artesanía .
- With the opening of the cheese museum, the Molino de Antigua has one more attraction to offer. In a specially converted house, visitors receive information about the cheese from Fuerteventura, the Queso Majorero.
