Caleta de Fuste (also known as Caleta de Fustes and El Castillo ) is a place in the municipality of Antigua , on the east coast of the Canary Island of Fuerteventura . Along with Corralejo , Costa Calma and Jandía Playa, it is one of the island's tourist centers. The population is 2,342 (as of 2017).

Based on old military maps, the bay was called El Castillo (German: Burg ; Schloss ), referring to the fortification that still exists today from 1740, which was supposed to offer the residents of the place protection from pirates . The district on the main beach, between Calle Alcalde Juan Evora Suárez and the main street, is called Caleta de Fuste, parte 1 by the municipal administration ; the newer part west of the main street as Caleta de Fuste, parte 2 . Officially, this district is called Castillo or Caleta de Fuste . There are no longer any other terms officially used for marketing reasons.

Before the 1980s, a Spanish company bought large tracts of land around the bay. After buying the land, a hotel complex with small houses was built, the El Castillo holiday club . A sports harbor was also created. After the reunification of Germany , information emerged about the people behind the purchase of the property and the hotel building. According to media reports, it is said to have been the haze of former East German secret services , the area of commercial coordination in the GDR's foreign trade ministry and the SED politician and economic functionary Alexander Schalck-Golodkowski .

The development is very narrow, in a mixture of large hotels and apartment blocks . As in many other holiday resorts, there is no longer a historically grown town center. With the aim of promoting quality tourism, two 18-hole golf courses were built on the main road to the south with immense effort for the water supply , and a shopping center with three hotels and a conference center was built directly on the coast.

The place is only around five kilometers south of Fuerteventura Airport , so that the planes mostly landing north overfly it at a low altitude.

On Fuerteventura, with the help of his holding company Befisa, her daughter Inver Canary and plenty of KoKo funds, he pulled up the dignified holiday park 'El Castillo', including the marina. The 400-house complex in the bay of Caleta de Fuste is now on offer. It is said to bring 200 million marks when it is sold, but Hermann does not want to talk to SPIEGEL about details "
