Life
Evangelatos learned to play the violin at the Athens Conservatory with Tony Schultze during his school days , but after graduating from high school he first studied medicine for a year, then law at the University of Athens . He went to Leipzig to continue his studies . During this time he followed poetic ambitions: in 1925 he published the collection "Impressionen" (Ιμπρεσσιόνες) in Athens and was one of the founding members of the magazine Mousa (Μούσα). In Leipzig he gave up his law studies and took courses in art history, and later also in music with the Reger student Max Ludwig . Finally, he enrolled at the Leipzig Conservatory , where he studied theory and composition with Hermann Grabner , piano with Otto Weinreich and orchestral direction with Kofler and graduated in 1928. His first symphony was performed with great success under Dimitri Mitropoulos in Athens in 1930 . In 1931/1932 he completed his studies with Felix Weingartner in Vienna before finally returning to Athens in 1932. Here he took over the direction of the orchestra at the city conservatory and founded the "New Symphony Orchestra" (Νέα Συμφωνική Ορχήστρα). From 1933 he taught composition at the State Conservatory, where he was co-director in 1937 and artistic director from 1940 to 1973. From its founding in 1937 to 1954 he was the permanent conductor of the Greek Radio Orchestra, from 1940 to 1972 musical director of the Greek National Opera. In 1957, after 20 years as General Secretary, he took over the office of chairman of the Greek Composers' Union (EEM) from his predecessor Manolis Kalomiris , which he held until 1980. He has also worked as a conductor outside of Greece, with orchestras in Munich, Wiesbaden, Basel, Rome and Belgrade, where he mostly integrated Greek music into his programs. As opera conductor he was responsible for the premieres of Mozart's operas in Greece; He has also conducted numerous Greek opera repertoire with works by Spyros Samaras , Dionysios Lavrangas and contemporary composers. His students included numerous important musicians, including Dimitrios Dapergolas , Stavros Solomos and Eleni Karaindrou .
Evangelatos was married to the harpist Xeni Bourexaki and is the father of the director Spyros Evangelatos and the mezzo-soprano Daphne Evangelatos .
