Antoine-Adolphe Dupuch (born May 20, 1800 in Bordeaux ; † July 11, 1856 there ) was the first bishop of Algiers .

Life

Antoine Dupuch was born in Bordeaux in 1800 as the son of the merchant Jean Dupuch (1752-1811). His mother was Lucie (Jenny) Bounin (1775-1810). As an eleven-year-old orphan, he was taken in and raised by his uncle Jean-Barthélémy Dupuch (1773-1847) and his aunt Jeanne (Rosy) Bounin (1777-1852). He attended the Institut Liautard in Paris , which later became the Collège Stanislas . After graduating, he studied law and was admitted to the Bordeaux bar in 1820 . In 1822 he entered the seminary in Issy one in Paris and received in 1825 in Saint-Sulpice , the ordination . He then worked in various pastoral and charitable functions in the Archdiocese of Bordeaux . For his efforts during the cholera - epidemic in 1835 he was awarded the Cross of the Legion of Honor Award. In 1836 he founded an orphanage.

25 dated August 1838 appointed Bishop of Algiers, he was on 13 September präkonisiert and received on 28 October in Bordeaux Cathedral by Archbishop Donnet the episcopal ordination ; Co - consecrators were René-François Soyer , Bishop of Luçon , and François Lacroix , Bishop of Bayonne . Antoine Dupuch set about building a Christian diocese in the Islamic environment with great enthusiasm and also brought many religious orders to Algeria. In 1841 Dupuch organized a prisoner exchange with the Emir Abd el-Kader . But before his work could bear fruit, the financial ruin put an end to his work. On December 9, 1845, he resigned and returned to Europe . He lived in Turin for 15 months , from where he a. a. campaigned for the release of Abd-el-Kader from custody. Returning to Bordeaux for a short time in 1851, Dupuch again had to flee abroad from his creditors, this time to Spain . Only after the French state settled the debt was Dupuch able to return to his home country, where he died in 1856. His successor Louis Pavy had Dupuch's remains brought to Algeria in 1864 and buried in the cathedral of Algiers .
