Antoine Ghanem

Antoine Ghanem ( Arabic أنطوان غانم, DMG Anṭwān Ġānim ; * August 10, 1943 in Tohwita, Beirut ; † September 19, 2007 in Sin-El-Fil, Beirut) was a Lebanese politician, member of the National Assembly for the Kata'ib (Phalange) and a member of the Future Movement . Ghanem was killed by a car bomb. The attack another six people died and 67 were injured.

Professional background

Ghanem attended the Collège Notre Dame in Furn al-Chebak and the Collège Sacré Cœur in Gemmayze, both Maronite private schools. After studying law at the Université Saint-Joseph in Beirut and at the University of Lyon , he taught for several years at the Université Libanaise as a professor of law.

Political career

In 1961 Ghanem became a member of the Phalangists and later their chairman in the Baabda district . In the elections in 2000 he was elected to the National Assembly in the electoral district of Baabda-Aley on the election list of the PSP of the Druze leader Walid Jumblat .

As a member of the Kata'ib, he enjoyed a certain autonomy within the bloc of the democratic meeting. Within the Kata'ib he supported Amin Gemayel in his dispute with the pro-Syrian party leader Karim Pakradouni . He became an advocate of the Gemayel-led reform movement within the party.

In September 2004 he voted against extending the term of office of President Émile Lahoud . He was an active participant in the Cedar Revolution after the attack on the vehicle convoy of former Prime Minister Rafiq al-Hariri .

In the parliamentary elections in 2005 , Ghanem was re-elected to the National Assembly as a member of the Baabda-Aley constituency. After the reunification of the party and the reconciliation between Amin Gemayel and Karim Pakradouni, he was elected to the party executive committee.

With Ghanem's assassination a few days before the planned start of presidential elections in Lebanon, the majority of the governing coalition in parliament was reduced to two members.
