Antonín H. Sokol (born June 4, 1847 in Neslovice , † May 14, 1889 in Brno ) was a Czech journalist, publicist, translator and writer. He also published under the pseudonym AH Neslovský .

Life

The son of a shoemaker received high school education in Brno and Vienna. During this time Sokol wrote his first patriotic and love poems, which he published in the newspapers "Besídka čtenářská", "Hvězda" and " Lumír ". He then worked in Brno as a journalist for the newspaper "Veselé listy". Then Sokol worked in Prague for the “Humoristické listy”, “Národní pokrok”, “Politics” and “Slavia” as well as for the “Koruna” in Chrudim . In 1883 he got a job as editor of the Brno newspaper "Moravská orlice".

Sokol was a co-founder of the associations "Matice divadelní", "Spolek českých žurnalistů" and "Ústřední matice školská".

In his stories, Sokol used humor and satire to depict social, social and religious contrasts in the Moravian countryside. As an author of comedies and social plays, Sokol took up the increasing national tensions in the cities. This led to the fact that some of his plays were not published or fell victim to censorship, such as “Výletníci neb Školní otázka v Modřínově”. Sokol also worked as a translator of German, French, Polish and Flemish works into Czech.
