Antonín Wiehl
Antonín Wiehl (born April 26, 1846 in Plasy , Bohemia , † November 4, 1910 in Prague ) was a Czech architect and a representative of historicism .
Life
Antonín Wiehl was a student of Josef Zítek and graduated from the Technical University in Prague . There he worked as an assistant from 1871 to 1875. From 1873 he also worked as a freelance architect. In 1883 he was appointed President of the Society of Engineers and Architects.
Similar to Josef Zítek, Antonín Wiehl was also influenced by the Italian Renaissance, in particular by the works of the architect Andrea Palladio . In the spirit of the Czech patriotic wave of the late 19th century, he combined the architecture of that time with elements (richly decorated gables and sgraffito ) of the Czech Renaissance. He often worked with the painter and illustrator Mikoláš Aleš on the decoration of facades .
Wiehl was mainly active in Prague . There he designed the Prague waterworks on Charles Bridge in 1883 , which is now the Bedřich Smetana Museum .
