Anton Bovier (born December 13, 1957 in Obersuhl ) is a German mathematician and physicist who deals with probability theory and its application in statistical physics .

After graduating from high school in 1976, Bovier studied physics at the University of Bonn with a diploma in 1981. He then went to Caltech (1981/82) and to ETH Zurich , where he received his doctorate in theoretical physics in 1986 under Jürg Fröhlich . From 1986 to 1988 he was Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of California, Irvine . From 1988 to 1991 he carried out research in Bonn, then at the Ruhr University Bochum, and from 1994 to 2008 he was head of the Interacting Random Systems group at the Weierstrass Institute in Berlin. In 2003 he became professor at the TU Berlin (where he completed his habilitation in 1995) and in 2008 at the University of Bonn (Institute for Applied Mathematics).

In 2012 he was Kloosterman Professor at the University of Leiden . He was a visiting scientist in Marseille (Center de Physique Théoretique), Santiago de Chile, at the Isaac Newton Institute, at EURANDOM (Workshop Center for Stochastics at the TU Eindhoven), at the EPFL in Lausanne, in Beijing, Paris and as a lady Davis visiting professor at the Technion in Haifa .

From 2000 he developed with Michael Eckhoff, Veronique Gayrard and Markus Klein a new potential theoretical approach to the phenomenon of metastability of stochastic dynamic systems. He and Frank den Hollander wrote a monograph on this in the basic teaching series . He also dealt with Brownian motion, which is subject to a branching rule (Branching Brownian Motion), about which he also published a book. In statistical mechanics he dealt with disordered systems, including spin glasses , and with applications in financial mathematics and mathematical biology (evolution models, genetics).

In 2013 he became a Fellow of the Institute of Mathematical Statistics . He was the director of the Les Houches summer school on mathematical statistical mechanics in 2005. Bovier was invited speaker at the 2006 International Congress of Mathematicians in Madrid ( Metastability: a potential theoretical approach ).
