Life

After graduating from high school in 1939, Grunwald was drafted into military service and was taken prisoner by the British. Shortly afterwards, he received his first job as a civilian employee of the British Air Force and, shortly after its establishment in 1949, was initially part-time in the German Trade Union Confederation (DGB). From 1959 Grunwald was taken over by the DGB as a full-time employee and one year later worked as a union secretary in Aachen. Finally, in 1966 he was elected chairman of the DGB district in Aachen and held this office until 1984.

Shaped by his experiences with the Nazi dictatorship, Grunwald soon joined the SPD, for which he sat on the Aachen City Council from 1969. As part of the extraordinary local elections in 1972 as a result of the local reorganization through the Aachen Law , Grunwald was also elected mayor for the first time and was able to repeat this success in the subsequent regular elections in 1975. He held this office until 1979, but then remained on the city council as councilor until 1994.

In addition to his professional and political commitment, Anton Grunwald also volunteered in several organizations. He was a member of the Europa-Union Deutschland , the Kuratorium Indivisible Germany , the DGB Bildungswerk NRW and the Bund der Berliner.

As a citizen-oriented practitioner, Grunwald maintained close contact with the people and stood up above all for the concerns of the socially disadvantaged classes. For his tireless political and social commitment he received the Hans Böckler Prize , the Federal Cross of Merit 1st Class and in 1984 the Golden Ring of Honor of the City of Aachen .
