Anton Huber (architect)

Anton Huber (born May 14, 1818 in Poysdorf , † August 3, 1874 in Vienna ) was an Austrian city ​​architect and local politician.

Life

Anton Huber was the son of a master brewer and was born in Poysdorf in Lower Austria . In 1844 he came to Vienna as a day laborer, where he first worked as a dike digger and later as a bricklayer. He was able to work his way up to foreman and finally became a builder in 1859. He only succeeded in doing this on the basis of his practical experience, because he had no theoretical knowledge or school education. In 1861 he became a citizen of Vienna. From 1864 he lived in Josefstadt (in a house he had built himself), where he was also politically active. In 1865 he belonged to the district committee of Josefstadt and was a liberal councilor for the 8th district from 1867 to 1874 . In this role he was mainly concerned with issues relating to construction. Huber ran a successful builder business and made a considerable fortune.

Anton Huber was married and had six children. He died of pneumonia at the age of 56 and was buried in the Sankt Marxer Friedhof .

The Hubergasse in Ottakring was named after him as early as 1856 , as he had built the first houses here around 1850 and the alley therefore goes back to him.

Anton Huber was a representative of historicism . He began as a builder in the Viennese suburbs with simple two- to three-storey houses that had little or no decor. Later he built rental houses near the city center, which had stronger decorative elements in the neo-renaissance style , such as plastic window canopies or corner bevels with attached bay windows. Huber's career from the simplest of circumstances to a successful building contractor is remarkable.
