Anton I.

Anton I ( Georgian ანტონ I , * 1720 , † 1788 ) was a theologian and Catholicos - Patriarch of the Georgian Orthodox Apostle Church .

Life

After studying and working as a priest, he became Catholicos Patriarch of all of Georgia in 1744 . In 1755 he lost his office because he was believed to have a tendency towards Catholicism . He then went to Russia and became archbishop there . He officiated first in Vladimir , then in Jaropol . In 1764, at the instigation of his cousin, King Heraclius II , was reinstated as Georgian Catholicos.

He wrote works on theology , philosophy , history , linguistics and literature , also translated works into Georgian . He founded higher education institutions in Tbilisi and Telavi . He promoted the printing of biblical and liturgical books as well as manuscripts. He works out an orthographic norm for this. In the liturgy he gave up Jerusalem and Byzantine traditions and approached the Russian tradition.
