Anton Kliegl was one of eight children of the spa musician Adam Tiberius Kliegl (1841–1879) and Therese Ströhlein (1838–1923). His grandfather Johann Kliegl came to Bad Kissingen with his orchestra from Bohemia in 1836 , where he founded the Bad Kissingen spa orchestra in 1837 .

As a trained plumber , Kliegl followed his brother Johann (1869-1959) in 1893 at the age of 21, who had emigrated to New York City in 1888 . There they both worked in an electric arc lamp factory, which they bought in 1896. They called their own company "Kliegl Brothers Universal Electric Stage Lighting Company" and specialized in stage technology and stage effects that they designed themselves. The company was one of the first of its kind.

On December 27, 1902, he married Leopoldine Herbig (born July 7, 1873 in New York, † April 2, 1950 in Bronx ). The marriage remained childless.

In 1911 he invented the carbon arc lamp, still known today under the name "Kliegl-Light", which doubles the luminosity with the same energy requirements and is used especially for stage lighting and filming. In the silent film era he developed many new special effects such as a. for the films " Ben Hur " and " Wizard of Oz ".

Kliegl gave generous foundations to his hometown Bad Kissingen, such as the Kliegl children's park, the Anton Kliegl elementary school, poor feeding, day nursery, children's rest home and the interior design of the council chamber in the old town hall is thanks to his generosity.

Kliegl died during a stay in his native Bad Kissingen in the hotel-sanatorium " Russischer Hof " (today DRV-Rehaklinik am Kurgarten, Kurhausstrasse 9) and was buried in Woodlawn Cemetery in the New York borough of Bronx .
