Johann Kliegl (born November 8, 1808 in Neukaunitz , Bohemia , † 1883 in Bad Kissingen ) was a Bohemian Kapellmeister . In 1837 he established the first Bad Kissingen spa orchestra with his orchestra .

Life

With the 15 musicians of his Bohemian wind orchestra , including six of his brothers alone, Johann Kliegl came to the Bavarian spa town of Bad Kissingen, at that time an internationally known " world bath ", for a guest performance in the 1836 summer season . His orchestra was enthusiastically received by the audience, which is why the tenants of the bathing business, the Bolzano brothers , spontaneously decided to hire these musicians from the coming season of 1837. May 1st, 1837, marked the birth of the Bad Kissinger spa orchestra with its regular spa concerts.

In order to be able to offer a full-fledged spa orchestra, Kliegl added a few strings to his orchestra from 1838 in addition to his winds , which had to perform several times a day from May to September. After every concert, the musicians had to collect money from their then wealthy listeners, because they did not yet have a fixed salary.

In the winter months, Kliegl went on tour with his musicians , occasionally even abroad. In 1846, for example, a guest performance as "The Bohemian Band" in Birmingham is mentioned.

It was not until 1855 that Kliegl ended his contract as Kapellmeister of the spa orchestra and handed his musicians over to the Würzburg composer and music director Johann Valentin Hamm (1811–1874), who had played as a violinist in the Bad Kissingen spa orchestra every summer from 1845 .

It is not known how Kliegl earned his living from then on. In 1865 he lived in Kissingen with his wife Felizitas , née Antlitz , who worked as a laundress , and the wood carving merchant Tiberius Kliegl in house 272 1/5 in Ostendstrasse (today Hemmerichstrasse). The house had six rooms, which Kliegl rented to spa guests, and a garden.

His grandson Anton Kliegl (1872–1927) became a successful entrepreneur in the USA, developing new types of lighting technology for the emerging film industry. He donated a lot of money to public institutions in his hometown and was made an honorary citizen of Bad Kissingen.

The article criticized the fact that the orchestra in England did not call itself “Kissinger Kurmusik”, but that “the gentlemen who have been there since 1838 quite a few nice sums have ergeigt ”, would have called themselves“ The Bohemian Band ”. " We know that these patriots are Bohemia, but the country team is not part of the business . "
